By virtue of its geographic position, Johor holds the inimitable distinction, logistically as being at the southernmost tip of the Asian continent. Strategically significant, Johor is also at the southern tip of the Peninsular Malaysia surrounded on three sides : to the west by the Straits of Malacca, to the east by the South China Sea and to the south by the Straits of Johor. Johor has much to offer travelers such as its rich history, colourful culture, shopping and entertainment.
PLACES OF INTEREST
- Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque The mosque is one of the most beautiful old mosques in Malaysia. The construction of the mosque took almost 8 years and as completed in 1900.
- Sultan Abu Bakar Museum This former main palace was built in 1866 and contains the historical artifacts of the Johor Royal Family. The exhibits are an impressive collection of rare treasures collected by Sultan Abu Bakar.
- Bukit Serene Palace The palace was completed in 1933 and its 32m tower is one of the cities landmarks.
- Bandaraya Square It is a large square surrounded by numerous hawker and craft stalls and also an evening hang-out. Visitors could watch the sunsets while taking an evening strolls on nearby Tebrau Beach.
- Art Gallery The gallery exhibits historical costumes, weapons, currency, manuscripts, ceramics and other fine arts.
- Aw Pottery The brick kiln, built with a Chinese design, is 48metre long and can accommodate approximately 2,000 pieces of pottery at each firing. The showroom displays variety of pottery for sale. Visitors can wander the studio behind the showroom to watch the potters at work.
- Ulu Tiram Rubber Plantation The plantation is open to visitors. Visitors can view the rubber trees and observe how latex is tapped and processed for various use.
- Ulu Tiram Palm Oil Factory Visitors can observe the workings of a palm oil factory and see how the oil is extracted and refined to form the base for products like margarine, soap and cosmetics.
- Rawa Island It is a beautiful island of golden beaches, coves and clear waters, visitors can snorkel and dive in its crystal-clear water.
- Sibu Island This Island is famed for its clean white beaches, clear blue waters and offshore coral reefs. The lush tropical vegetation which abounds further inland lends an air of restful ambience. There are facilities for snorkeling, scuba diving, wind surfing, sailing and angling.
- Besar Island Lying close to Pulau Rawa, with one hour boat ride from the mainland. The main water-sport activities are canoeing and snorkeling.
- Tengah Island The Island is used to be a Vietnamese refugee camp and is now had been gazetted as a marine park. It is a great place to watch the leather back turtles lay eggs from July – September every year.
- Endau Rompin National Park It is the famous national park, home to several animal species like the deer, elephants, leopards, tigers and rare Sumatran Rhinos. The park occupies an area of 488sq km and is rich in flora and fauna.
